Support for children with ADHD at school

For children with ADHD, many aspects of everyday school life are more difficult than they are for others – sitting still, concentrating, remembering everything. Your child often tries harder than others and still faces criticism. We provide support precisely where structure, calm and a supportive attitude are lacking – and help your child rather than holding them back. As much support as necessary, as little as possible.

How ADHD manifests itself in everyday school life

ADHD looks different in every child – but there are often recurring situations that arise in the classroom.

  • Concentration & easily distracted: Noises, movement or their own thoughts quickly distract them. They lose the thread of the lesson, and tasks are left unfinished.
  • Impulsiveness & interrupting: Answers are given before the question has been finished. This isn’t done maliciously, but it often leads to conflicts with teachers and classmates.
  • Organisation, materials & homework: The pencil case is left at home, homework isn’t noted down, and the worksheet disappears into a bag. Forgetting is rarely due to a lack of willingness.
  • Physical restlessness: Sitting still for long periods is difficult – fidgeting, standing up, rocking on the chair. The body needs movement, even when the lesson requires quiet.
  • Frustration & declining self-esteem: After receiving frequent feedback about what isn’t going well, children often start to doubt themselves. Setbacks can be discouraging and diminish their enjoyment of learning.

How our support helps

We tackle the specific challenges of the school day – calmly, patiently and right by your child’s side.

  • Bringing structure to the school day: We break tasks down into manageable steps, establish clear routines and help organise materials and homework → Structuring
  • Calm instead of escalation: In tense moments, we respond calmly and without provocation, rather than increasing the pressure – this helps to manage impulsiveness and frustration → Low-arousal & de-escalation
  • Maintaining focus: We gently redirect attention, agree on quiet signals and incorporate movement breaks that fit in with lessons.
  • Boosting self-esteem: We highlight successes and offer supportive guidance through setbacks, so that your child can regain confidence in their own abilities.
  • Independence as a goal: Through gentle prompting, we guide your child towards developing their own strategies and withdraw our support as soon as they no longer need it → our methods

Legal basis & application

ADHD can be classified as a mental disability within the meaning of integration support. In such cases, the Youth Welfare Office is usually the responsible funding body; the service is generally based on Section 35a of Book VIII of the Social Code (SGB VIII) (integration support in the event of an impending or existing mental disability). The responsible funding body decides whether school support is appropriate and eligible for approval in each individual case – we guide you clearly through every step of the application process.

Qualifications of our support workers

Our school support workers undergo a multi-stage selection process before they are assigned to work with a child. They receive ongoing training at our own Splash Academy – with a particular focus on ADHD, specifically on structure, calm de-escalation and fostering independence. This means your child is in experienced hands right from the start.

Frequently asked questions

My child has ADHD but no intellectual disability – is a school support worker still an option?

Yes. ADHD relates to a potential psychological disability within the meaning of integration support, not to intellectual ability. The relevant authority assesses on a case-by-case basis whether support is approved.

Won’t having a support worker make my child stand out even more?

Our support staff work as discreetly as possible and stay in the background. We often agree on silent signals and adjust how close we stay to ensure your child remains as independent as possible.

Does a school support worker also help with homework and organisation?

In day-to-day school life, we help with noting down homework, organising materials and structuring work steps – with the aim of your child gradually taking over these routines themselves.

What happens if my child reacts impulsively or has a difficult moment?

We handle such moments calmly and without adding to the stress, rather than increasing the pressure. This de-escalating approach helps to defuse conflicts before they escalate.

Which schools do you work with?

We work in mainstream and special needs schools in Brandenburg and Berlin. We’d be happy to discuss what’s specifically possible for your child’s school during an initial consultation.
